Ammonia-powered EV charging in Israel

GenCell Energy and Israeli automotive importer EV Motors have deployed their first off-grid, hydrogen-fueled EV charging station in Netanya, Israel. Based on GenCell’s existing ammonia-fed, alkaline fuel cell systems, the partners hope to deploy a network of off-grid charging stations in both the Israeli and Chinese markets.

In other updates, GenCell and Deutsche Telekom are working to deploy GenCell’s hydrogen & ammonia-fed backup systems for a field trial, and Japan-based TDK Corporation announced they would continue their investment in GenCell’s R&D program for green ammonia synthesis technology.


Ammonia vessel updates: the Castor Initiative, MS Green Ammonia & post-Panamax bulkers

Five ammonia vessel updates this week:

1. An ammonia/liquefied CO2 carrier concept design from Mitsui O.S.K. Lines & Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

2. Approval in Principle for an ammonia-fueled car carrier designed by China State Shipbuilding.

3. Approval in Principle for the MS Green Ammonia.

4. An MoU between three members of the Castor Initiative to design & construct two Very Large Crude Carriers.

5. A concept design for up to four types of ammonia-ready, LNG-fueled vessels (ARLFV) from NYK Line.


Trailing ammonia-coal co-firing in India

Adani Power and two Japanese organisations - IHI Corporation and Kowa - have signed a new MoU to conduct a feasibility study into 20% ammonia-coal co-firing at the Mundra power plant in Gujarat, India. The trio will also investigate increasing this co-firing percentage all the way up to 100% ammonia fuel (“mono-firing”). The new MoU contributes to a national-level partnership announced last week - the "India-Japan Clean Energy Partnership (CEP)".


Next Level Solid Oxide Electrolysis

A high-powered consortium of academic & industry partners - VoltaChem, TNO, ISPT, Air Liquide, BP, and OCI - will explore the upscaling potential of solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC) to an industrial scale. One of the industrial applications to be investigated is the use of SOEC technology for hydrogen production at an ammonia plant. The study aims to present a viable roadmap forward for an SOEC demonstration integrated into an existing petrochemical facility.


Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation and Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center join forces

Two maritime ammonia heavyweights - the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation and the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center - have signed a long-term agreement to accelerate the maritime industry’s decarbonisation efforts. The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation is currently overseeing a comprehensive ammonia bunkering study that will enable ammonia bunkering trials to proceed at two Singapore locations to start in 2023.


Ammonia-ready, ammonia-fueled and on-water ammonia production

1. Breeze Ship Design’s ammonia-fueled oil tanker design, with a demonstration vessel to be eventually chartered to Equinor.

2. An order for six ammonia-ready, robotic offshore vessels from VARD.

3. And the P2XFloater, a new vessel concept from H2Carrier for the world’s first floating, industrial-scale ammonia production plant.


Ammonigy: Speedboats powered by green ammonia

In order to demonstrated ammonia-fueled solutions in a variety of applications, Stuttgart-based organisation Ammonigy has developed two patented technologies: a modular cracking unit that provides hydrogen to act as an “igniter” for the ammonia fuel, and an exhaust treatment system to minimise NOx emissions from the engine. But, while the principles behind Ammonigy’s technology solutions are very familiar to our readers, using them to convert a speedboat to run on ammonia fuel is certainly new! This week we explore results from testing on the GREEN AMY: the world’s first ammonia-powered speedboat.


New benchmark for coal co-firing reported in China

The South China Morning Post reports that China Energy Investment Corporation has successfully demonstrated co-firing 35% ammonia with coal at a power generation unit in Shandong Province. Further technical details emerged from additional Chinese media outlets, including that the pilot test occurred in a 40 MW coal boiler at the Huaneng Yantai coal power plant, and that NOx emissions were reportedly lower than burning pure coal fuel.
