Demonstrating CCS-based ammonia technologies in Japan
Our June episode of Ammonia Project Features focused on a new project in Niigata prefecture, which will demonstrate low-carbon, fossil-based ammonia production with a capacity of 500 tonnes per year. As part of the project, Japanese government organization JOGMEC will work with INPEX to develop enhanced gas recovery & CO2 sequestration monitoring technologies. Tsubame BHB will deploy its low-temperature, low-pressure ammonia synthesis technology based on an electride-supported catalyst developed at the Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Small-scale CCS ammonia in Japan
INPEX has selected Tsubame BHB and Air Liquide as technology providers for the demonstration project, which will utilise autothermal reforming technology and CCS in depleted gas fields to produce around 500 tonnes of ammonia per year. JOGMEC and NEDO are also supporting the project, with the goal of gaining operational experience with CCS in Japan.

Woodside outlines scale for green ammonia project in Tasmania
Woodside Energy secured land this week for its H2TAS project in Bell Bay, Tasmania. A long-term lease on a partially-cleared project site nearby the Bell Bay Advanced Manufacturing Zone will be home to up to 1.7 GW of electrolysers, and a target production of 200,000 tonnes per year green ammonia. Last month Woodside also announced the H2Perth project: a world-scale, 1,500 tonnes per day hydrogen production facility aimed at local markets for refueling fuel cell vehicles, and international markets via export in the form of liquefied hydrogen or ammonia.

Building an ammonia supply chain in the UAE: bunkering, blue, and 2 GW of green ammonia
ADNOC announced this week that it will embark on a joint study with three Japanese organisations – INPEX, JERA, and the government agency JOGMEC – to explore the commercial potential of blue ammonia production in the UAE.
Also this week, TAQA Group and Abu Dhabi Ports announced plans for a green ammonia export facility to be based in the Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD). A 2 GW solar power plant will power electrolyzers that will feed green hydrogen into the ammonia production facility, with a pipeline to connect the setup to storage tanks at nearby Khalifa Port.
