Abstract

As the global transition toward renewable energy intensifies, the demand for green ammonia is expected to rise, creating a strong market for green ammonia producers. Green ammonia produced from electrolysis is a promising solution for low carbon ammonia because when hydrogen is produced using renewable electricity it can be considered zero carbon.  Most of the cost of green ammonia comes from the cost of green hydrogen as feedstock.  Solid oxide electrolysis can produce hydrogen at the highest efficiency compared to other available electrolysis routes and this efficiency can be further enhanced by integration of waste heat stream from ammonia synthesis to generate steam as input.  Our model results demonstrate that a SOEC technology platform provides the most efficient electrolysis route to hydrogen and Ceres is the most efficient among SOEC technologies due to its ability to operate at lower temperatures between 500-600°C.
