Gentari, GIC, Greenko to develop multi-million tonne production capacity in India
A new partnership between the trio aims to produce 5 million tonnes of renewable ammonia per year at multiple locations across India. Round-the-clock renewable energy from the Indian grid will be utilised, as well as electrolysers manufactured via a separate tie-up between Greenko and John Cockerill.
Exploring ammonia retrofits at the Sakra power plant, Singapore
Sembcorp, IHI and GE will explore potential retrofits to existing gas turbines at the Sakra power plant to run on 100% ammonia fuel. The Sakra plant currently features two GE 9FA turbines, which are among the models IHI & GE are targeting for development of a “retrofittable” ammonia combustion system.
EXMAR: ammonia-powered gas carriers on schedule for delivery
EXMAR’s two new Midsize Gas Carriers will be built at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea and fitted with ammonia dual-fuel engines. WinGD will supply the engines for the vessels, which are on track for delivery in early 2026.
Namikata Terminal to be repurposed into an ammonia-ready clean energy hub
Led by Mitsubishi, a new seven-member council will seek to transform Namikata Terminal in southern Japan into an ammonia-focused clean energy hub. The hub will handle over 1 million tonnes of ammonia annually, receiving imports from production hotbeds such as Corpus Christi & Lake Charles on the US Gulf Coast.
Avaada Group: $2 billion secured for new Odisha project
REC Limited has committed nearly $5 billion total to three new energy projects in Odisha state, including renewable ammonia projects to be developed by Avaada and ACME Group. Avaada also announced that its facility will include a “cutting-edge” ammonia storage facility, to be developed at Gopalpur Port. The new funds follow a $1 billion investment in Avaada from infrastructure giant Brookfield earlier this year.
Thorium-powered ammonia production in Indonesia
In our September episode of Ammonia Project Features, Pupuk Kaltim and Copenhagen Atomics joined us to explore their new, nuclear-powered ammonia project in Bontang, East Borneo. Cophenagen’s Thorium-fed, Onion Core® reactor design will be integrated with solid oxide electrolysers and an existing ammonia synthesis loop to produce more than one million tonnes per year of low-carbon ammonia.
