Current certification gaps hindering development of a global market: new IRENA report

IRENA and RMI’s new report Creating a global hydrogen market: Certification to enable trade concludes that there are significant gaps and conflicts in current certification schemes. Inconsistent labelling thresholds, accounting boundaries, and production pathways are the main areas of concern. The report offers several recommendations to support the harmonisation of certification frameworks, warning that schemes cannot continue to develop in a “patchwork” manner.

ADNOC, North Rhine-Westphalia to explore ammonia fuel use in German industry

ADNOC, Currenta GmbH and the North Rhine-Westphalia state government will cooperate on the production, transportation to Germany and subsequent application of low-carbon ammonia fuel. Industrial-scale testing of ammonia fuel for power generation will take place at one of Currenta’s chemical manufacturing sites in the region.

Lotte Chemical: high ambitions for the South Korean ammonia market

OCI Global will supply clean ammonia to Korea from this year as part of a new agreement with Lotte Fine Chemical. The pair will also develop a global ammonia bunkering network by leveraging their existing infrastructure. Meanwhile, CF Industries and Lotte Chemical will explore new opportunities for clean ammonia production on the US Gulf Coast, as well as long-term off take to South Korea.

Ammonia cracking technologies gather traction across Europe

In cracking technology updates this week:

Air Liquide’s industrial-scale, ammonia cracking pilot plant at the Port of Antwerp is expected to be operational in 2024.
In the UK, AFC Energy has announced a new cracking technology platform.
Aramco and Linde Engineering have plans to develop their own ammonia cracking technology based on a new catalyst, with a demonstration plant in northern Germany to follow.
And Fraunhofer IMM researchers have developed the compact AMMONPAKTOR cracking reactor system, which will be utilised to feed PEM fuel cells.

New vessel concepts for offshore production, storage & transport of ammonia

Through its ammonia FPSO vessel project, SwitcH2 expects to start producing ammonia offshore 2028, while Louis Dreyfus Ports and Logistics’s “FRESH” mobile ammonia terminal concept is expected to become commercial by 2025. Recently awarded AiPs affirm the technical feasibility of both designs.

Infinity Power & Masdar: mega renewable projects in Mauritania, Egypt

Masdar joint venture Infinity Power, Germany-based Conjuncta and the government of Mauritania have agreed to develop an export mega-project. Up to 8 million tonnes per year of renewable fuels of non-biological origin will be produced for export to Germany. In Egypt, Masdar’s two million tonne per year ammonia fuel project on the Suez Canal has been fast-tracked via a “golden license”.

Vlissingen ammonia import hub progresses

Proton Ventures has been awarded a FEED contract to “re-convert” existing tanks to handle ammonia imports at Vesta Terminal’s site in Vlissingen. The future “Greenpoint Valley” hub will have a throughput capacity of at least one million tonnes per year of ammonia, jetty access for VLGCs, railcar loading, and potentially an onsite ammonia cracker. Also in the Netherlands, Battolyser Systems is leading a proposal for a native electrolyser manufacturing ecosystem in Rotterdam.

Establishing a renewable ammonia supply chain from Thailand

Mitsui OSK Lines, Mitsubishi, Chiyoda and the Electricity Generation Authority of Thailand will work together to build a clean hydrogen & ammonia value chain, with production based on renewable energy generation in southern Thailand. The MoU was signed on the sidelines of the official launch of the Asian Zero Emissions Community: a new region-wide initiative to drive the energy transition in Asia.

HyEx: ammonia from the Chilean desert

In our latest episode of Ammonia Project Features, Asunción Borras (Engie) and Pablo Wallach (Enaex) presented the HyEx project. Although a historical exporter of nitrogen fertilizers, Chile is now a major importer of ammonia, particularly as a feedstock for manufacturing mining explosives. Solar PV generating potential in Chile’s Atacama desert is among the world’s best, and the HyEx project will leverage this to produce renewable ammonia. By 2030, HyEx could produce enough ammonia to completely replace Enaex’s current ammonia imports, with volume left for exports or other applications.

Last month, AEA Executive Vice-President Hans Vrijenhoef presented to a full house at the 29th AFA International Fertilizer Conference in Cairo, Egypt. Hans covered the challenging task of aligning the current & future ammonia certification tools being developed by various parties. There was also evidence of huge MENA momentum for clean ammonia at the event, both in Egypt and the wider region.
