The pair will join forces to promote the adoption of low-carbon ammonia fuel in the maritime sector, with an initial focus on US inland waterways transportation. Amogy has also signed a new agreement to explore the potential retrofit of vessels in Skansi’s offshore service supply fleet with its ammonia-to-power technology system.
World Energy GH2 has announced that it has acquired a key piece of infrastructure for the development of Project Nujio’qonik: the Port of Stephenville on Newfoundland’s west coast. On the other side of Newfoundland island, the Port of Argentia and Pattern Energy have agreed to commercial terms for a planned renewable ammonia project adjacent to the port.
India’s state-owned oil and gas company ONGC will invest $13 billion to deploy 10 GW of renewable energy generation by 2030. At least 5 GW of this will be in Rajasthan, where ONGC and Greenko have an agreement to develop a million-tonne-per-year ammonia production facility. ONGC is considering a similar-sized ammonia facility in Karnataka, potentially powered with offshore wind.
The pair will develop an 850,000 tonnes per year renewable ammonia production facility in Queensland, Australia. The ammonia will be used domestically by IPL, exported to Singapore for use in Keppel’s under-development power generation projects, or sold to customers in Asia for energy needs. The source of the renewable hydrogen feedstock will be the nearby Central Queensland hydrogen mega-project. The million-tonne-per-year, $8.4 billion renewable hydrogen & ammonia production facility will be built near Al Muwaileh, Saudi Arabia. Project partner Air Products will act as EPC contractor, and has also secured exclusive ammonia offtake rights from NEOM for thirty years.
Germany-based DAI Infrastruktur will develop Project Ra - 1.6 million tonnes per year of ammonia to be produced near Port Said on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast. DAI has already secured two offtake deals for the project, totalling one million tonnes of ammonia per year from 2028.
New industry partnerships between suppliers, offtakers and existing infrastructure owners will boost confidence for project developers in the fast-growing renewable ammonia industry. Recent announcements from Namibia, Germany and Norway demonstrate that a comprehensive ammonia supply chain is being established between Europe and key global locations, making FID & project investment decisions more straightforward.
World Energy GH2’s Project Nujio’Qonik has a new partner, with SK ecoplant announcing a $50 million investment. Bloom Energy has also announced it will provide solid oxide electrolysis cells for the initial phase of the project. On the other side of Newfoundland, Pattern Energy is developing a renewable hydrogen & ammonia export facility at the Port of Argentia, with exports to Europe to begin from 2025.
Norway-based North Ammonia will supply at least 100,000 tonnes per year of ammonia fuel to Höegh Autoliners from 2030, powering their future fleet of Aurora class car carriers. Grid-based electrolysis will feed production of ammonia in Eydehavn on Norway’s south coast, with bunkering to take place somewhere in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam Antwerp area. In more maritime ammonia news out of Norway this week, Skarv Shipping will receive government funding to develop cargo vessels featuring ammonia-powered, four-stroke engines.
