Ammonia-to-Power to decarbonize heavy industries
Presentation

Amogy aims to enable the decarbonization of the hard-to-abate sectors, such as shipping and power generation, with its emission-free ammonia-to-power solution. Amogy has developed a compact, high-efficiency ammonia cracker to crack ammonia into hydrogen, where the produced hydrogen is subsequently used to generate power through a fuel cell. This proprietary design leverages the superior physical characteristics of liquid ammonia with the performance advantages of matured hydrogen fuel cell technology. To date, Amogy’s ammonia-to-power system has been demonstrated with success in a 5 kW drone, 100 kW tractor, and 300 kW semi truck, and the Amogy team is working on retrofitting…

Amogy: ammonia-powered semi-truck
Article

Amogy has announced successful testing of its new ammonia-powered, Class 8 semi-truck in Stony Brook, New York. The 300 kW ammonia-to-power system powered the semi-truck for several hours, with full track testing to occur later this month. Amogy now has its sights set on a 1 MW demonstration in a retrofitted tugboat later this year.

Fortescue & Deutsche Bahn to develop ammonia-powered trains in Germany
Article

Deutsche Bahn and Fortescue Future Industries will collaborate to modify existing locomotive diesel engines to run on hydrogen & ammonia fuel. The pair will utilise Ammonigy’s ammonia cracking technology in their design, with a prototype, bench-top engine currently undergoing testing in Germany. This week FFI also signed an agreement to develop a new energy import terminal in Wilhelmshaven.

Ammonia as a liquid for the future of aviation
Presentation

Zero-emission aviation initiatives have mainly focused on using hydrogen or drop-in biofuels and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to replace fossil-based jet fuels to achieve near-term reductions in carbon emissions with minimal impacts on the global aircraft fleet and supporting infrastructure. Despite significant advances in the production of such fuels, scaling up manufacturing capability to be cost-competitive remains a challenge. This paper discusses ammonia as a carrier of green hydrogen for aviation, with near-zero emission. Ammonia is proposed as both a carrier of hydrogen as fuel and to provide cooling for compressor intercooling and cooled cooling air for core efficiency improvement,…

Sunborne Systems: bringing keystone technologies to market for the global zero-carbon energy infrastructure
Presentation

At Sunborne Systems, we are developing zero-carbon ammonia-based solutions for heavy transport and high-energy industrial applications. Our keystone technologies are initially focussed on early opportunities in the maritime industry and have high disruption potential across multiple other hard-to-abate sectors. Sunborne Systems was announced a year ago at COP26 in Glasgow and is a joint venture technology company formed by STFC, Reaction Engines and IP Group building upon the technical strengths of Reaction Engines and STFC in thermal management and catalyst chemistry and their in-common expertise in system design and optimisation.

Amogy: Ammonia-powered tractor
Article

Amogy have successfully demonstrated a new ammonia-powered tractor in Stony Brook, New York. A 100 kW ammonia-to-power system was successfully integrated into a John Deere mid-size standard tractor, which can operate on liquid ammonia fuel for a period of several hours.
